Hydrogen + Oxygen ⟶ Water Balancing Chemical Equation

Hydrogen and Oxygen react with each other to form Water. The chemical equation for this reaction is: H2 + O2 ⟶ H2O but this is not a Balanced Chemical Equation which means number of atoms of each element on Left Hand Side of equation are not same as that on right hand side.

So as is clear from the above table, number of hydrogen atoms on Left Hand Side and Right Hand Side of Chemical Equation are same.
But number of Oxygen atoms on both hand sides of Chemical Equation are not same, two Oxygen atoms on Left Hand Side while only one in Right Hand Side.

So, in order to make H2 + O2 ⟶ H2O Chemical Equation balanced, we somehow need to modify it so as to make 2 oxygen atoms on Right Hand Side.

Let’s dive in and see step by step How Water Forming chemical equation can be balanced?

Step 1 – Identifying which Element’s atom are in different numbers on both sides of Chemical Equation.
Here it’s Oxygen as is clear from above table.

Step 2 – Use some Natural Number(1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ……….) to make number of atoms of Element identified in Step 1 equal on the both side of Chemical Equation.

So putting 2 in front of H2O in Right Hand Side of Chemical Equation will change number of atoms of Oxygen to 2 making it equal to number of Oxygen atoms on Left Hand Side of Equation.

So now we have Chemical Equation: H2 + O2 ⟶ 2H2O

But as we tried to make number of Oxygen atoms same on both sides of Chemical Equation, we have made number of Hydrogen atoms unequal on either sides of Chemical Equation.
So now somehow we need to changes number of hydrogen atoms on Left Hand Side of Chemical Equation to 4.

Tip
Whenever you put any number in front of some atom/molecule in Chemical Equation, just make sure that by doing so you are not misbalancing number of atoms for some other atom/molecule on both sides of equation. If its happenning then in the next step try to make some adjustments same like Step 2 mentioned above.

Step 3 – Put some Natural Number in front of H2 so as to have same number of Hydrogen atoms on both sides of Chemical Equation.
So now Chemical Equation will be 2H2 + O2 ⟶ 2H2O
