On the day of Diwali, women make rangoli outside their houses. Young girls are often seen making beautiful rangoli designs. In the evening, houses are decorated with candles, lamps and diyas.
Flowers and garlands are also used to beautify the houses. This is done to welcome and worship Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. Children buy lots of crackers that day. The crackers come in all shapes and sizes. Everybody wears new clothes. Children are very enthusiastic about this festival.
At night, the sky is full of fireworks and people start celebrating the festival by burning crackers. Nowadays, children are aware of the fact that firecrackers create a lot of air pollutions and lead to many diseases. They have now started avoiding crackers to an extent.
On this day, after the puja, people go out and exchange greetings, sweets, and gifts with each other. Diwali is an occasion when people get a chance to visit their near and dear ones.
The festival unites people from all walks of life. Diwali is an important festival for businessmen too. On this day, the new calendar starts and the businessmen close site accounts of the previous year and start new accounts.
